VALUES
CURIOSITY:
Not every experience is guaranteed to be 'successful' or 'positive,' but I firmly believe that each encounter holds valuable lessons in the end.
Approaching situations with an open, passionate, and curious mindset, coupled with a willingness to embrace failure while being fully present for yourself and others in the room, enables you to extract rewards from every experience.
INTENTIONALITY:
I consciously strive to slow down specific aspects of my life, allowing myself to pause and make thoughtful decisions rather than impulsive ones.
Whether engaged in a 'play' mode to workshop material for a new show, rehearsing a variation for an upcoming performance, or directing movement for a video shoot, my constant aim is to achieve verbal clarity in direction and physical clarity in the body to ensure our objectives are unmistakable.
Being intentional and clear in our choices, regardless of the clarity of the actions themselves, will propel us toward our goals.
ACCEPTANCE:
Before each session with a student, I inquire, 'On a scale of 0-100%, with 0 being 'exhausted, not present, mentally scattered' and 100 being 'mentally clear, enthusiastic, and without aches or pains in the body,' what percentage are you at today?'
After they share, I follow up with, 'Well, whatever percentage you are at in this moment, can you be 100% of that percentage?'
It's unfair and dishonest to demand more of ourselves than our current state allows. There is always something to be learned and gained, even if we are operating at 50% for the day, as long as we are truthful with ourselves and others about what we can offer at that level.
We experience varying levels of energy each day, and the more honest we are with ourselves about our energy, the more authentically we can engage in the work at hand.
COLLABORATION:
I take great joy in sharing my expertise in dance and movement, be it through instruction, performance, or interdisciplinary collaboration.
However, I hold the belief that every student contributes as much to my learning as I do to theirs. Instead of saying 'I don't get it,' I prefer to ask, 'Can you share more?'
My approach is centered on fostering dialogue and discussion, avoiding a lecture-style interaction. I also advocate for building a toolbox of skills that you can carry forward on your own.
EMPOWERMENT:
Our work should imbue us with empowerment and love for the work we do. I aim for every interaction with me to leave you in higher spirits, and with a greater trust in your ability to navigate your curiosities and questions independently.
I seek to collaborate with individuals who share mutual enthusiasm for the partnership. It's not about proving oneself to the other, but rather, a shared exploration where we can bounce ideas off each other and celebrate the beauty of each other's talents and strengths.
